United in Blue

On Oct. 24, the whole world was filled with the color blue to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the United Nations. World-famous landmarks all around the world, as well as the UN headquarters in New York, were adorned with blue lighting to symbolize the global organization. The date, Oct. 24, was designated in 1948, when the UN Charter took effect. The UN’s goal is to promote international cooperation. It has 193 member states.
More than 200 structures in about 60 countries participated in the commemoration. New Zealand marked the beginning, and other participants, including the Opera House in Sydney, Australia; the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France; the Great Wall of China; the Great Pyramids of Giza in Egypt; and the Empire State Building in New York. Besides the annual UN concert, various events also took place throughout the year under the theme “Strong UN. Better World.”
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said, “By turning the world UN blue for a day, we can light a way to a better tomorrow.” He expressed his concern that the world suffered from things such as violence, poverty, and sickness, but he added, “without the United Nations, our world would be a far bleaker place.”

10월 24일, 유엔의 70주년을 기념하기 위해 전세계가 푸른색으로 채워졌다. 뉴욕의 유엔 본부뿐만 아니라 세계적으로 유명한 전세계 주요 건축물들이 그 국제적인 조직을 상징하기 위해 푸른 조명으로 장식되었다. 10월 24일은 1948년에 유엔 헌장이 효력을 발휘한 날로 지정되었다. 유엔의 목표는 국가간의 협력을 증진시키는 것이다. 유엔에는 193개의 회원국이 있다. 약 60개 국의 200개가 넘는 건축물이 기념식에 참가했다. 뉴질랜드가 처음 시작하였으며, 호주 시드니의 오페라 하우스, 프랑스 파리의 에펠탑, 중국의 만리장성, 이집트의 피라미드, 그리고 뉴욕의 엠파이어 스테이트 빌딩을 포함한 다른 참가국도 있었다. 매년 여는 유엔 콘서트 이외에도, “강력한 유엔, 더 나은 세계”라는 주제 아래에서 한 해 동안 다양한 행사들이 진행되었다. 반기문 유엔 사무총장은 “하루 동안 전 세계를 유엔의 파란색으로 바꿈으로써, 우리는 더 나은 내일을 비출 수 있다”고 말했다. 그는 세상이 폭력, 가난, 그리고 질병 등으로부터 고통받은 것으로 염려를 표했지만, “유엔이 없었다면, 우리의 세상은 더 절망적이었을 것”이라고 덧붙였다.
